Mehak- the best Indian food in Seattle
June 7th, 2009Indian food is what I crave, want, favor, study and love more than any other type of cuisine. I’ve tried just about every restaurant in Seattle and when traveling tend to shop around as well. New York City- in the West Village was the last place I experienced a truly great Indian meal. Since then I’ve resigned myself to cooking at home, mostly because the establishments in Seattle have rated sub par in my book. Until this past weekend. Jesus Christ…finding Mehak Indian Cuisine is the equivalent of a family of fantastically talented Indian cooks moving in next door. Pulling up, the place isnt much to look at- its small, tucked away in a strip of shoddy looking shops. The first hint that Mehak is going to be damn good however is readily apparent-an Indian grocery sits right next door. The menu is lengthy, the staff wonderfully friendly and talkative…most importantly the food- devastating. I really cant begin to describe it..but Ill try. The naan bread was perfectly pillowy- not heavy in the least. I had the Baingan Bharta. This dish was a silky delicious mash of eggplant baked in a tandoor then sauteed with onions and ginger. Unbelievably tasty- the flavor was so full, the Indian spices erupting on cue. Wes got the Chana Masala which was a rich garbanzo bean/tomato medley in thick sauce. Needless to say, we cleaned up. Our plates looked as though they had been through a wash cycle..not a spot of either of our entrees remained. I know I was full 3/4 of the way through but this is one of those meals that regardless of what your stomach is telling you, your tastebuds trump intuition. I want to eat every meal at Mehak (well, except maybe breakfast-but even that I could be convinced) its that good. Go! Eat there! Its amazing.
